Carly Kind, who has been Director of the Ada Lovelace Institute since 2019, will be leaving the Institute in February 2024 to take on a new role as the Australian Privacy Commissioner.
Over the last four years, Carly has led Ada’s ambitious agenda to make AI and data work for people and society. Under her leadership, Ada has become a leading voice in ensuring that the transformative power of AI and data is used in ways that maximise social wellbeing and put technology at the service of humanity.
Carly Kind said:
‘Building and leading Ada over the past four years has been an immense privilege. I will be departing with a heavy heart, but with incredible confidence in and admiration for the brilliant team I leave behind.
‘The organisation has never been more relevant, expert or better placed to shape the rapidly changing field of data and AI policy and practice through its rigorous research, dynamic communications and people-centred approaches. I am excited to support the Nuffield Foundation to identify a new Director who can consolidate the organisation’s successes to date, and lead it into a new era of impact, growth and sustainability.’
Tim Gardam, Chief Executive of the Nuffield Foundation, said:
‘Since its inception four years ago, Carly Kind has built the Ada Lovelace Institute into an internationally recognised authority on the implications of AI on people and society. Founded and funded by the Nuffield Foundation, Ada has been as independent as it has been influential – a fact due in major part to Carly herself.
‘In her time as Director, Carly has been a model of inspirational leadership and has built an exceptional team around her. Carly leaves Ada in excellent hands, to continue in the next phase of its existence in helping to ensure the discourse around AI centres ethics and good governance.’
Recruitment for Carly’s position has now begun. Until the position is filled, Fran Bennett will remain Interim Director of the institute.
